Botanicals like turmeric, green tea, and black cohosh are increasingly being linked to liver damage, according to a new study.
The study, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, found that at least 156 million US adults may have consumed an herbal product with the potential to damage their liver.
The researchers looked at data from over 2,000 people who had been diagnosed with liver damage. They found that over 20% of these cases were linked to the use of botanicals.
The most common botanicals linked to liver damage were turmeric, green tea, and black cohosh.
The researchers say that their findings suggest that people should be cautious about using botanical supplements, and should only use them under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
