Earthquake Hits New York And Surrounding Areas

Earthquake Hits New York and Surrounding Areas

Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Felt Across Northeast

Minor Damage Reported

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has been felt across New York and the surrounding areas. The quake struck at approximately 11:03 AM EST and was centered about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south-southeast of Ossining, New York.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Hartford, Connecticut. Minor damage has been reported, including cracked roads and sidewalks. No injuries have been reported at this time.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit the New York City area since a magnitude 5.0 quake in 2010. However, it is still considered a relatively minor earthquake. Earthquakes of this magnitude are common in the Northeast, and they typically do not cause significant damage.

Residents of the affected areas are being advised to be prepared for aftershocks. Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that can occur after a larger earthquake. They are often less intense than the main earthquake, but they can still cause damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
